In their previous 10 games this season, the Lady Red Devils had never scored more than five goals in a single game.
On Tuesday afternoon, they scored six in 45 minutes.
The Allen Community College women’s soccer team went on to add another goal in the second half to defeat Maple Woods Community College 7-0.
“I think a big part of it was just playing together,” coach Jeremy McGinnis said. “When we started making those diagonal runs and those runs across the lines instead of a track meet running straight, things started to fall into place for us, obviously.”
The Lady Red Devils didn’t waste any time taking advantage of the gaps within the Monarchs’ defense. McGinnis’ offense pounced for four goals in the game’s first 15 minutes.
By the end of the first half, Allen led 6-0. The Lady Red Devils didn’t need any insurance in the second half but got it anyway with goal No. 7.
The squad’s season-high number of goals put an emphatic end to the squad’s worst scoring drought of the season.
The Lady Red Devils entered Tuesday on a two-game losing streak where they were unable to find the back of the net in either of those games.
It was the first time this year that Allen went back-to-back games without a goal.
But Rachel Nincehelser helped her team get out of its offensive funk by scoring a game-high four goals against Maple Woods while also adding an assist.
“(Nincehelser) has always been a big player for us,” McGinnis said. “She’s a very special player. She can score at any time and she’s very technical … We really are blessed to have her and lucky to have her on the team.”
Madison Evans notched two goals of her own and Hailey Melin added one too. Both Evans and Melin also each recorded an assist.
Jensen DeArmond led the team with two assists and Peyton Huckabay and Hayley Hunter each had one assist.
With the victory, Allen moved back above .500. Although Maple Woods is not in Allen’s conference, McGinnis said the blowout victory gives his squad confidence heading into the final month of the regular season where six of the remaining seven matches are against conference foes.
The Lady Red Devils host Butler Community College next at 3 p.m. Sunday.
“It gives us some confidence to try some different things we need to try in order to be successful against Butler and the conference,” McGinnis said.
